The city government of Candon under the leadership of City Mayor Ericson Singson continues to pour in assistance to tobacco growers with the rfelease of P12.3 million for financial assistance.
“We are just returning back to our tobacco farmers what the industry has provided,” City Mayor Singson said.
Based on the data obtained from the City Agriculture office, the city government recently provided the said financial assistance from tobacco excise tax (Republic Act 7171) to the more than 700 tobacco growers coming from 27 of the 42 barangays of the city.
According to OIC City Agriculturist Amado Corpuz, the said cash assistance subsidizes the gasoline and oil, wood for fuel, seedlings, tobacco barn repair and maintenance and other tobacco growers’ needs.
The city government is also expected to provide other aids like fertilizers, pesticides and farm machineries.
Aside from the city government, tobacco growers are also recipients of support coming from Deputy Speaker Eric Singson and the provincial government headed by Gov. Ryan Luis Singson.
Tobacco remains to be the premiere cash crop in the city and the whole province.
Ilocos Sur is the country’s biggest Virginia tobacco producing province with more than 40 percent of the country’s production coming from the province.
