Some 1,141 visually impaired residents of Candon City availed of the Eye Care Mission/Mobile Vision Clinic jointly sponsored by the City Government of Candon headed by City Mayor Ericson Singson, National Commission of Women of the Philippines (NCWP) under the leadership of Commissioner Norma Lozano, and Eye Care We Care (ECWC) Foundation, Inc. last June 30 and July 1, 2018 at Candon Civic Center.

It was Comm. Lozano who introduced and tapped the services of the ECWC, a non-profit, Christian centered foundation, founded by Dr. Jim Weyrich of Washington State, USA. The branch office of the foundation in the Philippines is headed by the power couple Dir. Susan Jane Damilao and Phil. Missions Dir. Ed Damilao.

The 19 volunteers and staff from ECWC were assisted by the LGU Team composed of employees from the City Health Office, Office of the City Mayor, City General Services Office, Public Order and Safety Office and City Police Station.

“We are happy to be of service especially to the less fortunate senior citizens, children and women who are in need of eye check-up and eyeglasses,” Comm. Lozano stated.

The program is part of NCWP’s advocacy on gender and development and the planning started on the last quarter of CY 2017 with the city’s GAD Focal Point System and TWA typical eye check-up today costs

P500-600 and prescription eyeglasses will set you back by P1500 to P3,000, so availing of this opportunity means a big help for our indigent constituents,” Comm. Lozano added.

Mr. and Mrs. Damilao supervised the mission operations, especially the eye check-ups, inspection of cataracts for hospital referrals and dispensing of free eyeglasses, both reading glasses and prescription glasses.

“Primary mission of the foundation is to provide free eye examinations, eye medications and free eyeglasses at no cost to the pre-screened indigent patients,” Dir. Damilao stressed out during the mission proper.

According to the couple, all their equipment and eyeglasses came from the United States.

Mayor Singson expressed his profound gratitude to NCWP and ECWC Foundation for bringing this mission in the City of Candon and reaching out to the 1141 Candonians.

As per final report, the mission was able to serve 1141 (915 female, 226 male), dispensed 1061 eyeglasses, and screened and recommended for surgery 80 patients.

NCWP and ECWC Foundation promised to conduct another Eye Care Mission by October 2019. (Grace L. Ramos)
