Perennial runner-up Darapidap dribblers finally bagged the City’s Inter-barangay Basketball Tournament crown after downing Bagani Campo, 88-74, in a winner take all game final held at the Candon Civic Center recently.
Darapidap, one of the most consistent barangay basketball teams in the city, had to endure at least three consecutive first runners- up finishes before sealing the title drought.
Darapidap last won city wide basketball title in 2011.
The 21-under inter-barangay tournament is jointly sponsored by the city government headed by City Mayor Ericson Singson and the federation of Sangguniang Kabataan led by Federated SK Federated President Emil Grace Cortado.
Patpata Primero ended up third while Langlangca Segundo salvaged fourth place.
Darapidap Coach Jayson Gamata said that the key to their victory was the team’s desire to overcome the team’s sorry loss in last year’s tournament where they were heavy favorite to win but lose due to injuries of their three key starters.
Emotions were also high coming into the knock out phase after Gamata’s mother died that served as additional rallying point of the team to dedicate their game to their coach’s mother.
Darapidap won the title in vindicating fashion as they end up undefeated tournament long.
Leading Darapidap team’s were tournament Most Valuable Player Daryll Ramos and Mark Alexis Gazo.
Darapidap defeated San Antonio in the quarterfinals and trounced Langlangca Segundo in the semifinals.
In the finals, Gamata said that the game was close and even were five-point down after first half.
They eventually rallied and came up 11 points up after the third quarter and held it on.
Meanwhile Candon City Mayor Singson said that the tournament was able to achieve its aim which was to have grassroots participation and discover talents.
This was validated by City’s basketball coordinator Michael Casiṅo who said he was able to see many talents and potential players to move up to bigger leagues or tournament. (LBJ)
