The city government under the leadership of City Mayor Ericson Singson provided subsidized hybrid rice seeds to farmers for the start of rice seed planting season.
“This is government intervention for our hardworking farmers who continue to feed us,” City Mayor Singson said.
Based on the data provided by the City Agriculture office, the city government purchased P4, 884, 400 million worth of hybrid and inbred rice seeds from R.A. 7171 city share fund to cover 1,200 hectares and benefit at least 1,563 farmers in the city.
OIC- City Agriculturist Amado Corpuz said that the said hybrid and inbred rice seeds can increase farmers’ production 10-20 percent.
Hybrid rice seeds which will need about 15-18 kilos to plant a hectare is capable of yielding a minimum of seven tons per hectare while inbred rice seeds with about 40 kilos needed for a hectare can produced at least 5.5 tons per hectare.
The provincial government headed by Gov. Ryan Luis Singson also gave hybrid rice seeds (Ryan Rice) enough to plant 527 hectares while the national government extended also rice hybrid amounting to P1.35 million.
Rice and tobacco remain the top two agriculture products of this agriculture based city.
