Candon City took home the coveted Region’s Green Banner Award in the recently concluded 2014 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremonies held in Bantay, Ilocos Sur.
City Mayor Ericson Singson headed the city’ delegation in receiving the award from Keynote Speaker Carmelita Abalos, president of the Nutrition Action Officers Association of the Philippines and City Nutrition Action Officer of Mandaluyong City, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator and other top officials of Region I Nutrition Council.
“Winning this award is a collective efforts of all stakeholders. I share this prestigious recognition to the men and women behind it,” Singson said.
Singson was accompanied by officials and members of the City Nutrition Committee which include City Nutrition Action Officer Nimpha Pascua, City Local Government Operations Officer Andres Vendiola, Jr. CPDC Naulie Cabanting , City Agriculturist Elmor Leaño, Candon Schools Division OIC superintendent Gemma Tacuycuy and Fe Diasen of the City Health Office.
The Green Banner award is the highest honor conferred to a local government unit for its exemplary implementation and management of nutrition programs.
It is part of the programs of the National Nutrition Council which as mandated by law is the country’s highest policy-making and coordinating body on nutrition.

Nutrition Program Coordinator Ma. Eileen Blanco thanked all the delegates for the successful conduct of the 2014 awarding ceremony and challenged the awardees to “keep the fire burning” in implementing nutrition programs in their respective areas and challenged areas to strive harder.
City Mayor Singson said that “we have a very productive and efficient City Nutrition Committee and the corresponding programs”.
Nimpha Pascua is the full time nutrition program action officer.
The success of the nutrition program is that there are full time barangay nutrition scholars in all the city’s 42 barangays with the city government providing incentives including support to their human development like backing them in attending seminars, trainings and workshops.
There is the breastfeeding room at government and private offices to cater to the needs of feeding mothers.
Singson said there are regular programs such as garantisadong pambata twice a year, regular conduct of operation timbang, monthly salt testing, expanded program on immunization, TB- DOTS, buntis day twice a week to make the program functional. Part of the programs also are scheduled bilateral tubal ligation and operation tuli.
The city government had established the Candon City Lying-in with a full time obstetrician.
The city also conducts annual Nutrition month culminating program and breastfeeding month celebration.
The city mayor said that nutrition program has many partners in implementing its nutrition related programs like Southern Ilocos Sur Medical Society, nak, Rural Improvement Clubs, Alay Hanap Buhay, Lions Clubs and others, City Social Welfare Office, City Agriculture and Department of Education.
City Mayor Singson said that the city government thru its CNC will continue working and is very hopeful that the city will duplicate the feat in the next awarding rites. (LBJ)
