2008 Feria de Candon celebration: Resounding Success PDF Print E-mail
Written by LBJ
It was a combination of music, arts, culture, trade opportunities and services that resulted to another successful celebration of the 2008 Feria de Candon.

"It another successful Feria and we are happy that people enjoyed it," said City Mayor Allen Singson.

This year's commemoration was highlighted by free concert inside the San Juan de Sahagun Church which brought out the best talents of the city in music and instruments.

Centrepiece is the city's acknowledged music icon, Minervina Singson, who continue to amaze and mesmerize Candonians and visitors with her compositions and piano-playing.

It marked also the first time that one of his sons, Deputy Speaker Eric Singson, sang an operatic aria. The Deputy Speaker was joined by his wife, former Congresswoman Grace and their three sons, City Mayor Allen, Dr. Ericson, and Owen, in the musical concert.

It was a benefit concert aimed for the replacement of the buttress of the church.

The five-day festivities also gave hope to young dreamers to complete their education with possible scholarships.

Hundreds of students trooped to be included as scholars for Nursing, Architecture, Engineering and Culinary Arts.

Deputy Speaker Singson said that it is part of the fulfilment of his services to the people by helping his constituents accomplish their dreams.

"I always felt fulfilment when I chance upon people who become successful because of the help of such education scholarship," Singson told the aspirants.

The regular showcase of the Feria was maintained like the trade fair for all 2nd District towns as well as the lantern parade.

Among the new features this year is the painting contest, float contest and singing contest ( Go Go Singing Barangay Officials Contest).

The City Feria commemoration is in recognition to the first Feria Exposicion in 1892. It is the first Trade Fair done in Ilocos province that time and considered to be the most successful.

Top officials from the Spanish government and local leaders attended the 1892 affair.

Trade Fair participants came all over Luzon including participants from Cagayan and Lepanto, Mountain Province who came to sell their gold and other metals.

Among the attraction that time was the 50-foot Bamboo tower patterned from the world famous Eiffel Tower of France.

In its anniversary celebration, the city government erected the Bamboo Tower, which is still standing at the moment. ( LBJ)
