Established in 1989, the Candonians of Southern California, Inc.

was incorporated in the State of California in 1991 as a non-profit civic organization. Its primary mission is to foster cultural and educational values in the community. Originally founded by 25 individuals with Violeta Consolacion Quismorio as President, there are currently more than 100 families represented in the organization including those residing  outside of Southern California.

Much has been accomplished by the organization including a highly successful scholarship program for underprivileged students at the University of Northern Philippines. To date, more than 30 bright and deserving students have received scholarship funding including Cathy Galvez, who is graduating this year with a degree in BSBA, Cum Laude.

Organized in 2005 and currently chaired by Sally Martinez Garibay, the“Adopt a School Project  selects one elementary school each year based on identified needs to become “adopted” by the organization. Educational materials such as school supplies, backpacks, reference books, dictionaries, encyclopedias and computer system are donated to the adopted school.  Talogtog Elementary School, Bagani Ubbog Primary School and the Bagani Elementary School are recent beneficiaries. Two additional  schools will be sponsored this year.

A program to aid indigent families with their health care needs is being developed and should become operational soon.

The Candonians of Southern California, Inc. takes great pride in their incessant efforts to recognize and honor individuals of Candonian ancestry with exceptional achievements in various areas of  human endeavor.  Four outstanding Candonians have been awarded the Don Isabelo Abaya Medal.  Retired school teachers were recognized  in a special ceremony. In March 2008,  Fernando Guirnalda, the First President of the Republic of Candon , was honored posthumously in the presence of his immediate family. Greg Gagarin, a Candonian with the US Marines who was killed in action in Iraq was honored. Fifty nine other men and women who have served, retired or were in active duty in the US or Philippine Military and other law enforcement agencies received awards of distinction. Awardees are featured in the Souvenir Program that is posted at www.tagacandon.com  (Click on ‘Souvenir Program’).

While fund raising activities take precedence over all organizational functions, members also take time to bond together in social events as in parties and traveling together as a group within or outside of the USA.  An annual Family Picnic, Christmas Party and other community activities strengthen friendship, promote camaraderie and provide social and emotional support for all members.

Our website, www.tagacandon.com,  has been viewed worldwide since 2007.  You can track fellow Candonians here and abroad by accessing the website.  Check it out to look for a long lost friend or a relative.  We welcome appropriate materials for website posting by emailing the item to  candonians@tagacandon.com.
